Day 10: All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name

They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
"You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being."
Revelation 4:10b-11

My Bible study lesson this week had some interesting and powerful themes. We studied Matthew 4, particularly the temptation of Jesus. On the one hand, we took comfort in Jesus' humanity. We were reminded that because he was fully human, he understands our daily struggles. He is able to help us in our temptations because He was tempted too. On the other hand, we take comfort in His divinity. We look forward to the day when our bodies will be free from sin forever and we will worship at the feet of our King who conquered sin once and for all. It is important to reflect on both aspects, Jesus' humanity and His divinity. Today's hymn is all about the later.

O that with yonder sacred throng
We at His feet may fall,
We'll join the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Beautiful! I can't wait!

There are two tunes for All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name that are commonly used, and while I love them both, the chorus of the Diadem tune just fills me with such joy. It is especially lovely when sung by a sanctuary full of women. Nothing against the men, of course. In fact, there is a hymn I have planned for later in this series that I associate with being sung by a sanctuary full of men. It's funny how you just hear certain hymns in your head certain ways.

Choosing videos for these hymns can sometimes be difficult, so today I'm taking the easy route and including three. The first is a lovely a cappella version, the second an amazing piano solo, and the third just a neat bonus -- an inspirational story involving this hymn (uses the other tune, Coronation). Sorry, to make you choose, that is unless you just want to watch all three. ; )

All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name!
Edward Perronet, 1779

(I've removed all the repeats from the lyrics)

All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall,
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Ye chosen seed of Israel's race,
Ye ransomed from the fall;
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget
The worm-wood and the gall,
Go spread your trophies at His feet,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Let every kindred, every tribe,
On this terrestrial ball,
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him Lord of all.

O that with yonder sacred throng
We at His feet may fall,
We'll join the everlasting song,
And crown him Lord of all.

  1. I had to click over to watch 3 videos! I'm glad I did. What a powerful story in the 3rd one! This may be my favorite hymn, and I enjoyed all 3 arrangements. :)

    1. Oh, good -- glad you liked them! I worry about overdoing it with the videos, but I'm really enjoying searching through all the different videos out there. It's amazing to see the wonderful ways God has gifted people musically.

I've been wondering what everyone's favorites where. I'll have to give an opportunity sometime in the series for you guys to share your favorites too. : )
